Sega's Financial Statements
This section is something I felt would be interesting to embark in: Sega's financial statements from 1998 to 2002. Now, firstly, why those years in particular? I believe it covers the "Dreamcast Era" at Sega, as we will see, their 1998 report mentions their previous generation console, the Saturn, only 4 times as Sega shows that they are fully invested into the Dreamcast, mentioned 25 times. The Fiscal Years 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002, which end on March 31st of said year, cover the entirety of the Dreamcast's time in the console market while 2002 will also cover Sega's Restructuring plan as they leave the hardware business for good.
I personally believe it would be a great insight as to "why" Sega had to pull out of the dedicated console market. Too often, we hear "Sega wasn't doing well" as the reason why but never an actual analysis of their financial statements. I will attempt to see their various segments, see the important financial ratios that show the "real" situation, as well as comment on their decisions for the future with the hindsight of 2026. This will give us a strong overview of Sega from the waning days of the Sega Saturn to the transition to being a third party developer. I will provide the link to each PDF of the Annual Report in their respective pages.
A quick disclaimer, while I am trained in finance (studied it for 5 years and will make my living in said field), I am NOT a professional financial analyst however I will be trying to keep things as close as to how a professional would do it. So expect some flaws in my analysis!
